At Widewell Primary, we aim to cultivate well-rounded, emotionally intelligent children who are prepared to navigate the complexities of life in modern Britain through the teaching of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education. We aim to equip our pupils with the knowledge, skills, and attributes necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing world and to contribute positively to society, through the Jigsaw PSHE curriculum. We encourage children to reflect on their own experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
Our aims:
Holistic Development: To foster the personal development of every child, ensuring they gain self-esteem, resilience, and confidence in their abilities.
Citizenship and Responsibility: To encourage respect and tolerance for diversity, fostering an understanding of democracy, community, and social responsibility.
Emotional and Mental Wellbeing: To teach children about emotional health and wellbeing, equipping them with tools to manage difficulties and develop healthy relationships.
Knowledge and Skills: To provide pupils with a comprehensive understanding of health, relationships, and economic wellbeing, enabling them to make informed choices.
Implementation
We have a whole school structured, age-appropriate curriculum through a PSHE scheme, Jigsaw. Jigsaw combines PSHE, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development. Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (known as a puzzle) at the same time. This enablesa whole school focus for adults and children alike.Jigsaw provides a structured, balanced, progressive, detailed and comprehensive scheme of learning for all ages the primary age range. It also meets all the outcomes of the statutory RHE curriculum.
Our learning is based on six core themes and a series of sessions are taught on each, for every age group, throughout the academic year:
• Term 1 - Being me in my school/world
• Term 2 - Celebrating Difference
• Term 3 - Dreams and Goals
• Term 4 - Healthy Me
• Term 5 - Relationships
• Term 6 - Changing Me
The Jigsaw scheme structure, provides and ensures consistency of learning and progressive skills throughout the school. PSHE is taught on a regular basis through weekly lessons. Activities encourage and enable the children to share or record their own thoughts, feelings and ideas during the sessions. Each class has their own floor book which is a shared place for recording.PSHE is integrated into our wider school ethos, culture and DREAM values, ensuring learning is reinforced through assemblies, school values and pastoral care.
Relationships & Sex Education (RSE)
An important part of the Jigsaw PSHE programme is delivered through the 'Relationships' and 'Changing Me' puzzle pieces which are covered in the summer term. Our philosophy starts by building positive self-image, a sense of identity and a healthy relationship with self, and from that starting point helps children grow healthy relationships with others.
Our aims:
• To enable children to understand and respect their bodies • To help children develop positive and healthy relationships appropriate to their age and development • To support children to have positive self-esteem and body image • To empower them to be safe and safeguarded.
Each year group will be taught appropriate to their age and developmental stage: • Foundation Stage - Growing up: how we have changed since we were babies. • Year 1 - Boys’ and girls’ bodies; naming body parts. • Year 2 - Boys’ and girls’ bodies; body parts and respecting privacy (which parts of the body are private and why this is). • Year 3 - How babies grow and how boys’ and girls’ bodies change as they go through puberty. • Year 4 - Internal and external reproductive body parts, body changes in girls and menstruation. • Year 5 - Puberty for boys and girls, and conception. • Year 6 - Puberty for boys and girls and understanding conception to birth of a baby.
Impact
The impact of our PSHE curriculum is evident through our children who demonstrate effective emotional wellbeing, resilience, and social interactions. This is evidenced by behaviour records, attendance figures, and participation rates in school activities. Our children exhibithigh levels of confidence when discussing sensitive topics, indicating a safe environment in which they can express their thoughts and feelings. Theyretain key concepts and can apply their knowledge in real-life situations, showcasing their understanding of healthy relationships and personal finance. Our children are knowledgeable about British Values and Protected Characteristics and therefore embrace respect, tolerance and equality. This creates a positive school environment where our children can flourish.
