Profile:
As a family, we move to the area in 2016, just before Sophie and myself got married. Our daughter, joined the pre-school at Widewell last year, and absolutely loves her time there, and we’re looking forward to her joining the school fully next year. We’re actively involved in the local area, with my wife also working in a local school. I started out my journey in education, at age 16, by starting a theatre group for young people. During my time in sixth form, I grew the group (Stage Stars) from just a few members, to over 80 strong, which still continues to this day at Notre Dame School. Stage Stars teaches children ages 4 – 18 various stage skills including acting, singing and dancing, and have held 4 shows per year in local city theatres. Leaving sixth form, I studied drama and theatre studies for 3 years at university, graduating with an Upper Second Class Honours degree in 2010 for Dartington College of Arts. I then made the decision that whilst I loved the performance arts, my passion in teaching was in mathematics, and so I then took a year long “conversion enhancement course” run by the DfE, to be able to each Mathematics, completing my PGCSE in 2012. Since then, I have been teaching at Saltash Community School. Starting out as a Maths teachers, and form tutor, I quickly became drawn to a pastoral pathway, and ensuring I could support students social and emotional wellbeing needs. In 2014, having only been teaching for 18 months, I was invited by Microsoft to take part in their Summer Bootcamp to learn about their emerging technologies. In 2015, after working with them on Office 365 when it was just a pilot project, I was invited to be a Microsoft Expert Education for the UK, and later that year, was flown to Barcelona, when a student leadership team I ran, were awarded second place across the globe, from over 800 finalist, in the innovative use of technology. The next year, I was lucky enough to be chosen as a regional winner of the UK Teaching Awards, and was invited to London as a finalist, where I was again awarded second place for “outstanding use of new technology”. Also in 2016, I gained promotion at Saltash, and gained the opportunity to follow my pastoral passion as a Head of Year, responsible for behaviour and student wellbeing. After spending a year teaching Drama due to staffing challenges, in 2019 I was asked to sit on the Microsoft Global Education Board, as the only UK teacher. The board met monthly to look at new and emerging technologies, and how these could improve education. This was a valuable experience, and it was honouring to be able to give back to the global education community by having influence at this high level within the cooperation. Over the last few years, my work on wellbeing has taken lead, and in 2021, having done the course myself a few years earlier as a participant, I became a certified trainer for Mental Health England, being able to deliver their courses on Mental Health First Aid Youth in schools across the region. As one of only a small number of trainers in Devon and Cornwall, I think it is vital that as many teachers become MHFA qualified, to support young people with their challenges going forward. I really look forward to hopefully having the opportunity to support the school, and represent the parental view, going forward.
